Blood positive on a urine test: what it can mean

A small amount may be invisible and found only by testing. Causes include irritation, a urinary tract infection, a kidney infection, stones, strenuous activity, menstrual contamination, or prostate enlargement such as benign prostatic hyperplasia. Burning, urgency, fever, back pain, or visible red urine can help clinicians interpret the finding, but some people have no symptoms.

Tell the clinician whether the sample was collected during menstruation, after strenuous exercise, or while you had urinary symptoms. They may repeat a clean-catch urine test, examine it under a microscope, or request a culture. Treatment depends on the cause; antibiotics are used for some bacterial infections, not for every blood-positive result. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed.

Arrange prompt medical review if you can see blood in your urine, the result persists, or you have pain in your side or back, fever, vomiting, or difficulty passing urine. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, clots that block urine flow, severe pain, confusion, or fainting.
