What blood in sputum means

Blood can be introduced by bleeding gums, a dry or scratched throat, a nosebleed or sinus mucus. Irritated lower airways from acute bronchitis can also produce streaks. Pneumonia may bring blood with fever and feeling unwell. Long-standing mucus with recurring bleeding can occur in bronchiectasis, and COPD may cause persistent cough and phlegm. The sign does not point to one diagnosis by itself.

Observe the amount and colour without trying to force more sputum up. Write down the timing, recent infections, nasal symptoms, smoking exposure and medicines, including those that affect clotting. Contact a clinician if the cause is unclear, if the blood returns or if you have a continuing cough. Assessment may include a physical examination and additional tests based on your symptoms.

Call emergency services for substantial or continuing bleeding, trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, severe weakness or confusion. Arrange urgent review for recurrent episodes, fever with breathlessness, or a known lung condition with a noticeable change in sputum.
