What blood in sputum may indicate

A forceful cough, dry throat, gum bleeding or mucus from inflamed sinuses can add blood before material is spat out. The lower airways can bleed when inflamed by acute bronchitis or pneumonia. Bronchiectasis may cause recurrent blood-streaked phlegm alongside long-term mucus, while COPD can make ongoing cough and airway irritation more likely. These conditions are not diagnosed from sputum colour alone; the pattern and examination matter.

Take a clear note of when the bleeding began, how often it appears, and whether it is on the surface of mucus or mixed throughout. Mention fever, breathlessness, chest pain, night sweats, weight change, smoking and all medicines to a clinician. A healthcare professional may check the mouth, nose and chest, review your history and arrange investigations when appropriate. Avoid sharing or self-starting antibiotics.

Get emergency care if bleeding is heavy or ongoing, or if you are short of breath, dizzy, faint, confused, or have chest pain. Seek prompt medical advice for any new episode that keeps returning, particularly when you have known lung disease or use blood-thinning medicine.
