What can blood from the throat after vomiting mean?

Repeated retching can scrape the throat or create a small tear where the food pipe meets the stomach. Swallowed blood from the nose or mouth can also be vomited. Blood that is bright red, clotted, or mixed with vomit may come from higher in the digestive tract; dark, granular material can indicate older blood. Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis, Migraine, or another illness may trigger vomiting, but the trigger does not explain away blood. The amount, colour, recurrence, abdominal symptoms, and general condition matter.

Stop eating temporarily if vomiting is continuing, sit upright, and take only small sips of water if you can swallow and keep them down. Do not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory pain medicine unless a clinician tells you to. Save a description or photo of the vomit if safe, and note any black stool, dizziness, abdominal pain, alcohol use, or medicines. Contact a clinician promptly even if the bleeding seems to have stopped, particularly after repeated retching or when you have a digestive condition.

Seek emergency care for more than a trace of blood, repeated vomiting of blood, black or tar-like stool, severe abdominal or chest pain, faintness, confusion, clammy skin, or a fast heartbeat. Do not drive if you feel weak or dizzy. Call emergency services if you cannot stay awake, cannot keep fluids down, or bleeding is continuing.
