Blood During Sex When You Have No Period

The blood may come from the vagina or cervix rather than being a period. A clinician can check both the bleeding and the reason periods have stopped.

Friction, vaginal dryness, inflammation, infection, or a small cervical growth can cause contact bleeding. Hormonal changes can also make vaginal tissue delicate and alter or stop periods. Menopause is one possible setting for both absent periods and dryness, while other causes of stopped periods include pregnancy, polycystic ovary syndrome, premature ovarian insufficiency, medicines, major weight change, and intense physical strain.

Bleeding after sex can occasionally reflect a change in the cervix or womb lining that requires investigation. Its colour or small volume cannot identify the cause, so repeated episodes should not be dismissed.

If pregnancy is possible, take a home pregnancy test and arrange prompt advice even if the result is negative. Note when your last natural period occurred, whether bleeding begins during or after penetration, its amount and colour, and any pain, discharge, dryness, contraception, or hormone treatment.

Book a clinical appointment for an examination. Depending on your history, assessment may include a pregnancy test, infection testing, inspection of the vagina and cervix, cervical screening if due, or imaging. Avoid penetrative sex if it triggers pain or heavier bleeding until assessed.

Seek urgent care now for heavy or continuing bleeding, severe or one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. These signs matter more if a pregnancy test is positive or pregnancy could be present.

Arrange a prompt appointment for any bleeding after menopause, bleeding that repeatedly follows sex, unusual discharge, pelvic pain, or bleeding between expected periods.

Ask where the blood appears to be coming from, whether pregnancy and infection tests are needed, what may have stopped your periods, and whether an examination, cervical test, or ultrasound is appropriate. Also ask what change in bleeding or pain should trigger urgent reassessment.
