Blood During Intercourse but No Period

Even light spotting is worth discussing with a clinician if it recurs, happens after menopause, or accompanies pain, unusual discharge, or missed periods. The colour or amount of blood cannot identify the cause by itself.

Friction can make dry or delicate vaginal tissue bleed, especially around menopause. Bleeding can also arise from inflammation or infection of the vagina or cervix, a cervical growth such as a polyp, or changes within the womb. Less commonly, a serious cervical, vaginal, or womb condition presents with bleeding after intercourse.

Stopped periods have several possible explanations, including pregnancy, menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome, premature ovarian insufficiency, changes in weight or exercise, stress, medicines, and other hormonal conditions. The explanation for absent periods may or may not be the explanation for bleeding during intercourse.

Pause intercourse if it hurts or bleeding continues. Record when the bleeding occurs, whether it follows penetration, its amount, and any dryness, pelvic pain, discharge, urinary symptoms, or missed periods. If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test and seek clinical advice about the result and bleeding.

Book an examination rather than assuming the blood is a late period. A clinician may inspect the vagina and cervix, review contraception and medicines, check whether cervical screening is due, and choose pregnancy, infection, or hormone tests according to your history.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, fainting, marked dizziness, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, feverishness, or feeling acutely unwell. Bleeding with pelvic pain when pregnancy is possible requires prompt assessment because a pregnancy outside the womb must be excluded.

Arrange a prompt appointment for any bleeding after menopause, repeated bleeding after intercourse, offensive-smelling discharge, or unexplained bleeding between episodes of intercourse.

Tell the clinician when your last natural period occurred, whether pregnancy is possible, what contraception or hormone medicines you use, and whether cervical screening is up to date. Ask whether the blood appears to come from the vagina, cervix, or womb and which examination or test could clarify the source.
