Blonde Hair Breakage at the Crown

The crown often receives direct heat, repeated brushing, sectioning during colour services, and tension from high ponytails or extensions. Short pieces that feel rough and end at varied lengths support shaft breakage, but increased scalp visibility can also come from shedding or follicle-related hair loss.

Look closely without pulling. Frayed ends, white dots along the shaft, and mixed-length pieces suggest structural damage. Smooth full-length strands coming away from the root suggest shedding. A widening crown, shiny skin, redness, scale, pustules, tenderness, or a sharply defined patch calls for clinical assessment rather than more cosmetic processing.

Traction alopecia can present in areas exposed to repeated pulling, and ongoing tension can eventually damage follicles. Scalp ringworm can present with scale and hairs broken near the scalp. Neither condition can be confirmed by colour or breakage pattern alone.

Stop tight top knots, heavy extensions, and direct high heat over the crown. Ask your colourist to map prior lightening and avoid overlap on fragile sections. When washing, spread shampoo over the scalp with fingertips rather than scratching, condition the lengths, and detangle in small sections from the ends upward.

Change the placement of clips and partings, use a smooth pillowcase or hair wrap, and shield the area from prolonged intense sun. Take photographs under similar lighting so changes in density or breakage are easier to compare.

Consult a dermatologist if the crown keeps widening, breakage forms a defined patch, or scalp symptoms such as itch, scale, pain, crusts, sores, or discharge appear. Seek prompt care for rapid hair loss with scalp inflammation or a tender swollen area. Earlier evaluation helps distinguish a damaged shaft from a condition affecting follicles or scalp skin.

Ask whether magnified examination shows broken shafts, miniaturised hairs, inflammation, or shedding; whether a fungal test is appropriate; which hairstyles should stop; and when the crown could safely undergo another colour service.
