Blocked oil gland on the face: what to know

A clogged pore can look like a blackhead, whitehead or small flesh-coloured bump. Oil, dead skin cells, cosmetics and friction can contribute. A deeper, round lump may be a cyst rather than a surface spot. Redness, tenderness, warmth or pus suggests inflammation or infection, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Facial skin can mark after picking, so a persistent lump is better examined than repeatedly treated at home.

Wash with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat dry. Choose non-comedogenic moisturiser and remove makeup before sleep. Avoid squeezing, scraping, harsh scrubs and using several strong acne products at once. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend a topical treatment suited to your skin and the type of lesion. Stop a product that causes burning, swelling or a spreading rash. Keep hands and pillowcases clean, but do not over-wash the area.

See a clinician if the lump grows, keeps returning, bleeds, changes colour, becomes painful, or does not settle with gentle care. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading facial redness, marked swelling near the eye, fever, severe pain or feeling very unwell. A clinician can distinguish a clogged pore from acne, a cyst, infection or another skin condition.
