Blocked nose but no cold: what should you know?

Allergic rhinitis can cause swelling, sneezing, itching, and clear drainage without a fever. Dust mites, mould, pets, pollen, smoke, and strong scents may trigger symptoms. Chronic sinusitis can cause ongoing congestion, facial pressure, reduced smell, or drainage. A deviated or narrow nasal passage, nasal polyps, dry air, and frequent use of decongestant sprays are other possibilities. A blocked nose is a symptom rather than a diagnosis; the absence of a cold does not point to one single cause.

Notice whether symptoms follow a place, season, activity, or product. Avoid smoke and strong fragrance, clean dust carefully, and use saline spray or rinse as directed. If you use a rinse, use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water. A pharmacist can discuss allergy medication or other options, taking your age, pregnancy status, and existing medicines into account. Avoid starting antibiotics without an examination.

Book an appointment for blockage that lasts, keeps recurring, affects sleep, or is consistently one-sided. Seek urgent care for difficult breathing, swelling around the eyes, changes in vision, confusion, severe headache, or a severe feverish illness. Mention loud snoring, pauses in breathing, or daytime sleepiness because these may indicate obstructive sleep apnoea.

Ask what examination could identify the cause, whether allergy testing or an ear-nose-and-throat review is appropriate, and which treatment is safe for you. Describe smell changes, discharge, bleeding, facial pain, triggers, and every nasal product you use.
