Blocked nose and sore throat: what to know

A viral cold can inflame the nose and throat at the same time. Mucus draining backwards from a congested nose may irritate the throat, while mouth breathing can make it feel dry or scratchy. Allergic rhinitis may cause a blocked or runny nose, sneezing and throat irritation without the general unwell feeling of a cold. Sinusitis may cause pressure around the cheeks or forehead, reduced smell and thick discharge. Chronic sinusitis is considered when nasal and sinus symptoms continue or repeatedly return. House dust mite allergy can create an indoor pattern, especially around bedding or dusty rooms.

Drink regularly and choose warm or cool fluids that soothe your throat. Saline nasal spray or rinse may loosen mucus; use the product as directed and take care with water safety for rinsing. Rest your voice, avoid smoke and keep the air comfortably humidified without exposing yourself to mould. A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain relief or allergy medication after checking your health conditions and current medicines. Antibiotics do not treat every cause of these symptoms, so do not start leftover medication.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing throat swelling, or a muffled voice with severe discomfort. Seek prompt medical advice for dehydration, severe one-sided throat pain, a persistent high fever, worsening facial pain, or symptoms that are not improving. Arrange review when episodes recur or nasal blockage interferes with sleep and daily activities.
