Short answer

Upper abdominal bloating is a sensation of pressure or fullness above the navel that may follow eating, reflux, swallowed air or digestive irritation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Location matters
Say whether pressure is above the navel, central or beneath a rib.
Before review
Track food, timing, bowel pattern and associated symptoms.

Possible explanations

Notice whether the sensation is central or under one side of the ribs, and whether it is linked with meals. Gas, indigestion, constipation and food reactions can cause pressure. Acid Reflux may cause fullness with heartburn or regurgitation. Coeliac Disease, Food Intolerance and Irritable Bowel Syndrome can present with bloating, although the same symptom can have many explanations. Pain that is localised, prolonged or associated with fever needs clinical attention.

Making symptoms easier to assess

For a short period, eat calmly and chew thoroughly, avoid gulping drinks, reduce fizzy beverages and remain upright after meals. Keep normal hydration and gentle movement. Write down the timing, food portions, pain, stool pattern and any menstrual or medication link. A clinician may recommend targeted changes or tests rather than a broad elimination diet. Nutrition Counselling may be useful when food restriction is becoming stressful.

Warning signs

Seek a routine appointment if symptoms are new and persistent, repeatedly disturb daily life or are accompanied by ongoing diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, reduced appetite or weight loss. Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, a hard distended abdomen, blood in vomit or stool, fainting or breathing difficulty.

What to ask

Ask which features make reflux, food intolerance or a bowel condition more likely, and whether your medicines could contribute. Take your diary and describe the exact site and quality of discomfort.

Questions people ask

Is upper abdominal bloating always from gas?

No. Gas is one possibility; reflux, indigestion, food reactions and other digestive conditions can feel similar.

Can food changes help?

Sometimes. Identifying a repeatable trigger can help, but broad restriction should be guided so nutrition remains adequate.
