Short answer

Stomach bloating is a feeling of fullness or pressure that can result from swallowed air, digestion, constipation, food intolerance, or an underlying condition.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common sensations
Fullness, pressure, tightness, or visible abdominal swelling
Useful record
Meals, symptom timing, bowel movements, and medicines
Urgent warning
Severe pain with repeated vomiting or inability to pass stool or gas

The short answer

It may make the abdomen feel tight or look more prominent after meals. Bloating can come and go, or continue alongside discomfort, belching, altered bowel movements, or early fullness.

What bloating can mean

Gas can build up when you swallow air while eating quickly, chewing gum, drinking through a straw, or talking while eating. Constipation can also leave stool and gas moving slowly through the bowel.

Bloating after particular foods may occur with lactose intolerance or another food intolerance. Persistent bloating with abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits can occur with irritable bowel syndrome. Coeliac disease, giardiasis, and Helicobacter pylori infection are other conditions a clinician may consider when symptoms fit. Bloating alone does not identify one cause.

What you can do

Keep a simple record of meals, drinks, bowel movements, and symptoms. Eat slowly, choose smaller portions, stay hydrated, and take gentle walks if you feel able. If constipation is present, gradually increasing fibre may help, but a sudden increase can temporarily worsen gas.

Do not remove several food groups without guidance, because this can make meals unnecessarily restrictive. A clinician or nutrition counsellor can help identify patterns and plan balanced changes. Medicines for gas or constipation may be suitable for some people, but ask a pharmacist or doctor if symptoms are frequent, you take other medicines, or you are pregnant.

When to seek medical care

Arrange a medical review if bloating is new and persistent, keeps returning, interferes with eating or daily activities, or comes with ongoing pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, weight change, or reduced appetite. A clinician may ask about timing, diet, bowel habits, and medicines before deciding whether tests are needed.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen and hard abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, blood in vomit or stool, fainting, or trouble breathing. These symptoms can signal a problem needing prompt assessment.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: What causes best fit my timing and other symptoms? Could constipation, a food intolerance, or a medicine be contributing? Should I keep a food and symptom diary? Do I need testing, and what warning signs should prompt an earlier review?

Questions people ask

Can bloating be caused by food?

Yes. Certain foods, lactose intolerance, and other food intolerances can cause bloating, especially when symptoms repeatedly follow the same meals.

When should bloating be checked?

Book a review when bloating is persistent or recurrent, affects eating or daily life, or occurs with pain, vomiting, bowel changes, weight change, or reduced appetite.

Should I stop eating foods that cause bloating?

Record the pattern first and seek tailored advice before excluding several foods, so changes remain nutritionally balanced.
