Bloated stomach and shortness of breath

Gas, constipation, or a large meal can stretch the abdomen and limit how freely the diaphragm moves. This may feel worse when sitting or lying down. Breathlessness with wheezing, cough, chest tightness, palpitations, unusual tiredness, or swelling needs a broader assessment. Conditions such as asthma, anaemia, angina, atrial fibrillation, or COPD can present with breathlessness; the symptom alone cannot identify one cause.

Sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and take slow breaths. Avoid a heavy meal, fizzy drinks, and strenuous activity while you monitor the symptoms. Note when the bloating and breathlessness began, whether passing wind changes it, and any cough, fever, chest discomfort, or medication use. Arrange a medical assessment if this is new, recurrent, or not settling.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, chest pressure, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue. Sudden breathing difficulty after a food, medicine, or sting may indicate anaphylaxis. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or cannot speak comfortably in full sentences.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest an abdominal cause, a lung problem, or a heart-related issue; what examination or tests are appropriate; and which changes should prompt urgent help.
