What should you know about a urine test?

A dipstick may identify white blood cells or nitrites that support a urinary tract infection, while blood can occur with infection, stones, irritation or other urinary conditions. Protein may point to kidney strain, but a single unexpected result does not establish a diagnosis. A laboratory may examine cells, measure substances, or grow bacteria from the sample. Symptoms and collection quality affect interpretation.

Follow the collection instructions and provide a clean, fresh sample when requested. Tell the clinician about burning, urgency, fever, back pain, visible blood, pregnancy, medicines and previous urinary problems.
