Bleeding nose and headache: what to know

Dry air, nose rubbing, forceful blowing, Allergic Rhinitis, and a Common Cold can irritate the nasal lining and cause bleeding; congestion or facial pressure may bring a headache. Chronic Sinusitis can cause ongoing nasal symptoms and pressure. Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion may cause headache and dry nasal tissue. Dengue Fever can present with headache and bleeding, usually alongside fever and feeling unwell. Anxiety can also contribute to headache sensations, but it should not be assumed to explain bleeding.

The direction of the symptoms matters: a headache does not identify its cause from a nosebleed alone. Consider recent injury, high heat exposure, medicines that affect clotting, fever, neck stiffness, weakness, vision change, and confusion when deciding how quickly to seek care.

Sit upright and lean forward. Pinch the soft part of the nose continuously and breathe through the mouth. Do not tilt your head back, blow your nose, or place objects deep inside it. Move to a cool place and take small sips of fluid if heat or dehydration may be involved. Rest, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you; ask a pharmacist or clinician if unsure.

Call emergency services for a sudden severe or unusual headache, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, seizure, confusion, fainting, stiff neck, repeated vomiting, vision loss, or a nosebleed after a serious head injury. Seek urgent care for heavy or persistent bleeding, fever with marked illness, or symptoms of Heat Exhaustion that do not improve after cooling and fluids.

Ask whether the bleeding source is nasal, what may be triggering the headache, whether your medicines increase bleeding, and which symptoms require immediate reassessment.
