What should you know about bleeding after vomiting?

A small streak of bright-red blood can come from irritation in the mouth, throat, or food pipe after repeated retching. Dark blood or material that looks like coffee grounds may indicate older blood from the upper digestive tract. Vomiting illnesses such as gastroenteritis or food poisoning can trigger the retching, but the illness itself does not explain every bleeding episode. Severe upper-abdominal pain can occur with pancreatitis or gallstones and changes the urgency.

The amount, colour, number of episodes, abdominal pain, dizziness, and stool colour help a clinician judge the situation. Meningitis symptoms or a severe migraine with unusual vomiting need separate urgent attention.

Stop solid food temporarily if vomiting continues, take only small sips of clear fluid if you can keep them down, and avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatory painkillers unless a clinician has advised them. Do not drive if you feel faint. Note the blood’s colour and approximate amount, and bring a list of medicines to the assessment.

Go to emergency care for more than a trace of blood, coffee-ground vomit, black stools, faintness, confusion, fast breathing, severe chest or abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt advice even after a small streak if bleeding returns, you take blood-thinning medicine, or you have known digestive disease.

Ask whether the bleeding seems related to retching, whether tests are needed, which medicines to pause, and how to replace fluids safely. Clarify which changes in vomit or stool should send you back for urgent care.
