What should you know about bladder polyps cystoscopy?

Short answer

Cystoscopy lets a urologist see a bladder polyp directly, but tissue examination is usually needed to determine the exact diagnosis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a visible bladder polyp means

The word polyp describes a growth projecting from the bladder lining; it does not by itself identify the cell type or behaviour. Some growths are inflammatory or otherwise non-cancerous, while others can be bladder tumours. Appearance through the cystoscope helps the urologist locate, size, and describe the area, but diagnosis relies on tissue examined by a pathologist. A flexible cystoscopy may identify the growth during an outpatient visit. Removal or deeper sampling is often arranged with a rigid instrument under anaesthesia so the tissue can be assessed and the bladder wall beneath it can be evaluated.

What to do after a polyp is found

Make sure you know whether the finding was only observed, biopsied, or completely removed, as these lead to different next steps. Ask when the pathology report is expected and book the visit where it will be explained. Before any planned removal, give the team a full medicine list and highlight blood thinners, allergies, urinary infection symptoms, and previous reactions to anaesthesia. Follow instructions about fasting and transport. After a biopsy or removal, use the discharge guidance for fluids, activity, pain relief, catheter care, and return to work; the extent of the procedure affects recovery.

Warning signs after cystoscopy or removal

Seek timely advice for increasing burning, fever, chills, foul-smelling or cloudy urine, worsening lower abdominal pain, heavier bleeding, or clots. Get urgent help if urine stops flowing, a catheter stops draining and the bladder feels painfully full, bleeding is substantial, or you feel faint or seriously unwell. These problems can reflect infection, urinary blockage, or bleeding and require assessment based on the symptoms, not on whether the growth looked benign or suspicious.

Questions once results are available

Request the exact pathology name and ask whether the sample included tissue beneath the growth. If cancer cells were found, clarify the grade, how deeply they extend, whether removal was complete, and whether imaging, another bladder procedure, medicine placed in the bladder, or surveillance is proposed. If no cancer was found, ask what caused the appearance and whether further cystoscopy is still recommended because of your symptoms or history.

Questions people ask

Is every bladder polyp cancer?

No. A polyp is a description of shape, and both non-cancerous changes and bladder tumours can have a projecting appearance. Tissue analysis distinguishes them.

Can the polyp be removed during flexible cystoscopy?

Flexible cystoscopy may mainly identify the area. A separate rigid procedure under anaesthesia is often used when a larger sample or complete removal is needed.

Why might another cystoscopy be recommended?

A further examination can check healing, inspect for additional or returning growths, or complete treatment. The pathology result and the original reason for investigation shape the schedule.
