What should you know about bladder infection pills?

A bladder infection is a type of urinary tract infection affecting the lower urinary system. A clinician may prescribe an antibiotic when the pattern of symptoms and testing supports bacterial infection. A pain-relief medicine may ease burning or pressure, but it does not remove the infection. Different antibiotics suit different people, so do not use leftover tablets or share a prescription.

Take the medicine exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Nausea, loose stools, rash, or other reactions can occur; seek advice if symptoms are troublesome or severe.

Arrange a medical assessment if you have burning urine, frequent small amounts of urine, urgency, or pressure low in the abdomen. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and avoid delaying urination. A urine sample can help guide treatment, especially when symptoms return, pregnancy is possible, or you have a condition affecting the kidneys or immune system.
