Black spots from sun: causes, care and warning signs

Sunlight can stimulate pigment production and make freckles, sun spots or marks left by inflammation look darker. A photo cannot reliably distinguish every pigmented mark, so changes in shape, colour or behaviour matter more than the label used at home.

Flat, evenly coloured patches on the face, hands, shoulders or other exposed areas may reflect accumulated sun exposure. Dark marks can also remain after a pimple, scratch or rash heals, and sunlight may deepen that post-inflammatory pigment.
