Black poop and blood in urine: what to know

Black, tar-like stool can indicate bleeding in the digestive tract, although iron, bismuth and dark foods can also change stool colour. Blood in urine may arise from the bladder, kidneys or urinary tract. A [Urinary Tract Infection](/conditions/urinary-tract-infection/) can cause burning and blood, while [Kidney Stones](/conditions/kidney-stones/) may cause severe side or groin pain. Prostate conditions, kidney infection and other causes are also possible; one symptom does not explain the other.

Arrange prompt medical advice and describe whether the stool is sticky or tar-like, whether urine is pink, red or brown, and when each began. Bring a list of medicines, including blood thinners, iron and bismuth products. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. Drink normally unless you have been told to restrict fluids, and avoid strenuous activity until the urine bleeding has been reviewed.

Seek emergency help for black stool with fainting, severe weakness, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain, or blood clots preventing urine flow. Get same-day care for fever with urinary symptoms, flank pain, inability to pass urine, repeated black stools, dizziness or worsening bleeding. These signs can reflect significant blood loss, infection or obstruction.
