Black or Brown Spots on the Skin

The useful questions are whether the marks are flat or raised, when they appeared, what preceded them, and whether any one spot is evolving differently from the rest.

Inflammation can stimulate extra pigment, leaving a flat mark after a pimple, follicle irritation, rash, cut, or burn has healed. Acne commonly presents with pimples and can leave these marks, while pseudofolliculitis barbae commonly presents with inflamed bumps after hairs curve back into the skin.

Freckles, sun-related spots, and moles arise through different processes. Colour alone does not identify them. A stable group of similar marks is assessed differently from a solitary lesion with new asymmetry, an irregular edge, mixed colours, or ongoing enlargement.

Use broad-spectrum sun protection, seek shade, and avoid picking active bumps or scabs, because ultraviolet exposure and repeated injury can deepen pigment. Keep skincare simple if the area is irritated and introduce only one new active product at a time.

Take a clear baseline photograph with a ruler nearby and compare the same spot under similar lighting. Do not bleach, burn, or apply unregulated lightening mixtures to an unidentified lesion. Treatment works best when it matches the cause and when ongoing inflammation is controlled.

Arrange a prompt skin examination if a mark is new and steadily enlarging, becomes asymmetrical, develops an uneven border or several colours, repeatedly bleeds or crusts, or looks distinctly unlike your other spots. Urgent care is appropriate when darkening appears rapidly with severe pain, blistering, fever, spreading redness, or breakdown of the skin.

Ask whether the mark is post-inflammatory pigment or a separate lesion, whether magnified examination or sampling is needed, and which ingredients are suitable for your skin tone. Explain the original rash or injury, sun exposure, product use, medicines, and any family history of concerning skin lesions.
