Bite cellulitis: signs, care and when to get help

It can begin when bacteria enter through skin damaged by an insect, animal or human bite. Increasing redness, warmth, swelling and tenderness around the bite are typical warning changes; fever or feeling unwell can accompany a more significant infection.

A local reaction may itch and swell soon after a bite, then settle. Cellulitis tends to become increasingly sore, hot and red, and the affected area may expand rather than remain centred on the bite. Pus, red streaks or tender glands add concern for infection.

Cellulitis commonly presents with painful skin, redness and swelling. Broken skin, poor circulation or diabetes can make infection harder to control, so mention these factors during assessment.

Arrange a same-day clinical assessment if the area is becoming hotter, more painful, more swollen or larger. Gently wash it with soap and water, pat it dry, elevate an affected arm or leg, and avoid squeezing, scratching or cutting the bite.

A clinician can examine the skin, check whether infection has spread and decide whether antibiotics are appropriate. If treatment is prescribed, follow its directions and contact the clinician if the redness continues expanding or you feel worse.

Seek urgent medical help for rapidly spreading redness, severe or escalating pain, fever with shaking chills, confusion, unusual drowsiness, fast breathing, faintness, purple or black skin, or red streaks moving up a limb. These signs can indicate a serious or spreading infection.

A bite near an eye, on a hand, over a joint, or from a person or animal also warrants prompt assessment because deeper structures may be involved. Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, collapse or marked confusion.

Ask whether the pattern fits cellulitis or a bite reaction, whether the wound needs cleaning or preventive vaccination review, and which changes should trigger reassessment. Also mention when the bite happened, what caused it if known, medication allergies, immune problems and any recent antibiotic use.
