What should you know about Bill Gates and mRNA vaccines?

Short answer

An mRNA vaccine gives cells temporary instructions to help the immune system recognise a target; the message is then broken down.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How mRNA vaccination works

mRNA is a short-lived biological message. After vaccination, some cells use that message to make a harmless target protein or protein fragment. The immune system learns to recognise it and can prepare a response. The vaccine message does not become part of a person’s genetic material, and it does not remain in the body as a lasting instruction. The exact target and formulation depend on the vaccine.

Preparing for vaccination

Before vaccination, tell the clinician about previous severe allergic reactions, current illness, pregnancy, immune conditions and medicines. Ask which vaccine is being offered, what schedule applies and what reactions are expected. After the injection, remain where staff can observe you for the period they recommend. Soreness, tiredness, headache or fever can occur and are usually managed with rest, fluids and advice from the vaccination team.

When to seek medical help

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse, chest pain or a fast or irregular heartbeat after vaccination. Contact a clinician about symptoms that are severe, unusual, worsening or not settling. Do not delay emergency care while trying to identify whether a symptom is vaccine-related.

Useful questions

Ask whether this vaccine is suitable for you, how your medical history affects timing, which symptoms need review and how to report a suspected reaction.
