Removing both fallopian tubes prevents natural conception because eggs can no longer travel to the uterus, but the operation does not normally remove the ovaries or uterus. Hormone production and menstrual cycles can therefore continue if the ovaries remain and no other procedure changes them.

Early recovery can include cramping, abdominal tenderness, constipation, nausea, and discomfort around the wounds. Gas used during keyhole surgery may also cause bloating or shoulder-tip discomfort. These effects should generally ease rather than intensify as recovery progresses.

The central lasting effect is loss of the natural pathway between the ovaries and uterus. Bilateral salpingectomy does not itself trigger menopause when functioning ovaries are left in place. Pregnancy may still be possible through IVF because eggs can be collected from the ovaries and an embryo placed directly in the uterus. The procedure may be performed for damaged tubes, sterilisation, or an ectopic pregnancy, so emotional responses can differ widely.

Follow the discharge instructions for wound care, bathing, prescribed pain relief, activity, driving, sex, and returning to work. Gentle walking can support circulation and bowel movement, while strenuous lifting should wait until the surgical team says it is suitable. A laparoscopic surgery system may be used for keyhole access, although recovery advice still depends on the exact operation and any additional procedures.

Contact the surgical team if pain is not controlled, wounds become increasingly red or start draining, bowel or bladder symptoms persist, or you are unsure whether recovery is progressing. If future pregnancy matters to you, request a fertility discussion so the implications and possible IVF pathway are clear.

Seek urgent care for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, or a painful swollen leg. Prompt assessment is also needed for fever, persistent vomiting, inability to pass urine, a swollen abdomen that is worsening, or a wound that opens or releases pus.

Ask whether the ovaries and uterus were left unchanged, what symptoms are expected from your specific surgical approach, and when follow-up is planned. Clarify any activity restrictions, how to manage constipation or bleeding, who to call outside clinic hours, and what the operation means for contraception and future fertility.
