What should you know about betaine hcl for gerd?

GERD, also called acid reflux, occurs when stomach contents move upwards and irritate the oesophagus. Betaine HCl adds hydrochloric acid to the stomach; it is not an established way to stop reflux. It could worsen burning or irritation, particularly if the oesophagus or stomach lining is already inflamed. Reflux may also be associated with a hiatus hernia, body weight, certain medicines or meal patterns. Symptoms can include a sour taste, cough, chest tightness, abdominal pain or difficulty sleeping, but these symptoms have other possible causes.

Do not begin or increase betaine HCl on your own. A clinician can review your symptoms and medicines and suggest an appropriate plan, which may include meal timing changes, avoiding personal triggers, raising the head of the bed, or an acid-reducing treatment when suitable. Seek advice before using any supplement if you have an ulcer history, take anti-inflammatory medicines, or are pregnant. Keep a note of meals, symptoms and nighttime episodes to discuss at review.

Seek urgent help for severe or new chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, or food becoming stuck. Arrange a medical review for ongoing heartburn, unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting, painful swallowing or a cough that does not settle. Chest symptoms should not automatically be attributed to reflux.
