Belly Ring Keloid: Signs, Care, and Treatment

Not every bump beside a navel piercing is a keloid. Irritation, infection, contact allergy, or a smaller raised scar can produce a lump, so an examination is useful before choosing treatment.

Keloids form when scar-making activity continues beyond what is needed to repair injured skin. The result may be a firm, rounded or irregular growth that extends outside the original channel. It can be skin-coloured, pink, red, brown, or darker than nearby skin, and some people notice tenderness or itching.

Friction, repeated snagging, pressure from tight clothing, and ongoing inflammation can keep a navel piercing irritated. These factors do not prove that a bump is a keloid, but they are useful details to share during an assessment.

Wash your hands before touching the piercing, minimise handling, and prevent waistbands from rubbing across it. Do not pop the lump or apply harsh acids, bleach, or improvised freezing products. If jewellery seems too tight, embedded, or made from a material that triggers a rash, have it assessed by a qualified clinician or experienced piercing professional.

Once the diagnosis is clear, a dermatologist may offer injections into the scar, cryotherapy, or a laser selected for thickness or colour. Larger keloids may be considered for excision, commonly alongside another strategy because cutting the skin can stimulate new scar growth.

Book a routine appointment when a lump keeps growing, becomes uncomfortable, or you are unsure whether it is scar tissue. Obtain prompt medical care if there is pus, rapidly spreading redness, marked warmth, fever, red streaking, escalating pain, significant bleeding, or jewellery disappearing into swollen skin. Treatment for a suspected keloid should wait until an active infection has been addressed.

Tell the clinician when the piercing was done, how the bump changed, whether it drains, and whether you have developed thick scars elsewhere. Useful questions include how the diagnosis was distinguished from infection, what each option may improve, which side effects matter for your skin tone, how many follow-up visits the plan involves, and how recurrence will be managed.
