Belly keloid: what it is and how it is treated

It can follow a piercing, operation, burn, injection, injury or inflamed spot. Treatment can flatten, soften or calm the scar, but recurrence is possible and a dermatologist may combine approaches.

Unlike a scar that stays within the edges of an injury, a keloid grows into nearby uninjured skin. It may be firm, smooth and darker, lighter or redder than the surrounding abdomen. Growth may begin after the surface wound has healed, and friction from waistbands can make itching or tenderness more noticeable.

A clinician can often identify a keloid by its appearance and history. A new unexplained lump, an open area or a lesion that looks unlike your other scars deserves examination because not every raised abdominal mark is a keloid.

Avoid picking, cutting or trying to drain the scar. Reduce rubbing from tight clothing and protect exposed skin from sunlight, which can make colour contrast more noticeable. Silicone gel or sheets may be discussed once the skin is fully closed; they should not cover an infected or open wound without clinical advice.

Options include steroid injections into the scar, freezing treatment, selected laser procedures and surgical removal. The choice depends on thickness, colour, symptoms, location and previous treatment. Excision alone can stimulate another keloid, so the clinician may recommend additional scar-control treatment and follow-up.

Book a dermatology assessment if the scar keeps expanding, causes persistent pain or itch, restricts movement, repeatedly catches on clothing, or is affecting your wellbeing. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, unexpected bleeding, rapid change or a wound that does not close. These features require assessment for infection or another skin problem rather than being assumed to come from the keloid.

Ask whether the mark fits a keloid diagnosis, what result is realistic for its texture, colour and symptoms, and whether combined treatment could limit regrowth. Mention how it began, whether it is changing, prior scars that grew beyond their wounds, medicines, skin sensitivities and any treatment already tried. Also ask what wound care is needed and which changes should trigger an earlier review.
