Belching and shortness of breath: what to know

A bloated upper abdomen or reflux can make breathing feel uncomfortable, especially after a large meal. That does not establish the cause of breathlessness. Asthma can present with wheeze, chest tightness, or variable breathing difficulty; acute bronchitis may add cough and phlegm. Anaemia can cause breathlessness with tiredness or paleness. Angina may cause pressure or discomfort with exertion. Anaphylaxis can cause sudden breathing difficulty with swelling, hives, or throat tightness. Atrial fibrillation may bring palpitations, weakness, or breathlessness. COPD and bronchiectasis can cause ongoing breathing symptoms, often with cough.

Stop strenuous activity and sit upright if you feel breathless. Note whether symptoms began suddenly, follow meals, occur with exertion, or come with wheeze, cough, palpitations, fever, or swelling. Do not dismiss breathlessness as trapped gas. If you have a prescribed reliever inhaler, use it only as directed. Arrange prompt clinical advice for new, recurring, or unexplained symptoms.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak normally, fainting, confusion, severe chest pressure, or sudden swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. Urgent assessment is also needed when breathlessness follows an allergic exposure or occurs with a racing or irregular heartbeat.
