What to know before a spirometry test

Short answer

Before spirometry, follow the test centre's medicine instructions, avoid strenuous exertion and smoking beforehand, and wear comfortable clothing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test measures

During spirometry, you breathe through a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer. The device records how much air you move and how quickly you blow it out. You will usually repeat forceful breaths so the team can judge whether the results are consistent.

The test may help assess asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, or a persistent cough. Results are interpreted with your symptoms, examination, and medical history; one reading does not explain every breathing problem.

How to prepare

Follow the appointment letter about inhalers and other medicines because some may need to be paused while others should be continued. Do not stop prescribed treatment without instructions. Avoid a heavy meal shortly before testing, wear loose clothing, and tell the team if you are unwell or recently had a chest infection.

Bring your inhalers or a medicine list. During the test, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, breathe as instructed, and tell the operator if coughing, dizziness, chest discomfort, or breathlessness prevents you from continuing.

When to pause or seek help

Tell the testing team immediately if you develop chest pain, severe breathlessness, faintness, or distress during the test. Arrange medical advice for a marked change in your usual breathing before the appointment rather than trying to push through the test.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which inhalers should I use or pause? Should I attend if I have a cough or infection? What will the result help diagnose? When and how will the findings be explained? Would inhaler therapy or a smoking cessation programme be discussed afterward if relevant?

Questions people ask

Can I use my inhaler before spirometry?

It depends on the inhaler and the purpose of the test, so follow the appointment instructions or contact the testing team.

What if I feel dizzy while blowing?

Stop and tell the operator immediately. They can let you recover and decide whether testing should continue.
