Bed bug spots on sheets: what to look for

Dark dots may be dried bed bug droppings, while reddish smears can come from blood after a bug has fed. Similar marks may also come from dirt, fabric dye, small wounds, or other insects, so inspect the whole sleeping area before drawing a conclusion.

Possible bed bug signs tend to cluster near places where people rest. Check mattress seams, piping, labels, the bed frame, headboard joints, nearby furniture, and cracks close to the bed. Look for live flat brown insects, pale shed skins, or small eggs alongside the stains.

Skin bumps cannot identify the pest by themselves. Bed bug bites may cause itchy raised areas, yet some people show little visible reaction, and pimples or follicle irritation can resemble bites. Marks on bedding plus physical evidence in hiding places provide a more useful clue than the pattern of a rash alone.

Photograph the marks before cleaning, inspect with a torch, and place any captured insect in a sealed clear container for identification. Avoid carrying uncovered bedding or furniture into another room, because this can spread insects through the home.

Wash and dry bedding using the hottest settings the fabric safely allows, reduce clutter around the bed, and vacuum seams and crevices carefully. Empty the vacuum contents into a sealed bag outside the living area. A qualified pest-control professional can confirm the insect and plan treatment; do not apply agricultural chemicals, outdoor pesticides, or skin products to bedding.

Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. Arrange a clinical assessment if scratched areas become increasingly painful, warm, swollen, or drain pus, or if a widespread rash persists. These features require attention because of the reaction or possible skin infection, regardless of which insect caused it.

Ask whether the skin changes fit bites, pimples, folliculitis, or another rash; which itch relief is suitable for your health and current medicines; and what signs of infection should prompt reassessment. Bring clear photos showing how the skin and bedding marks changed over time, but leave captured insects sealed at home unless the clinic requests them.
