What should you know about beard growth bald spots?

A smooth, sharply defined patch can occur with alopecia areata, while scaling, broken hairs, tenderness or crusting can accompany a fungal infection. Friction, repeated pulling and inflammation from grooming products can also affect growth.

Natural beard density is uneven for many people, especially when an area has always been sparse and is not changing. A newly formed round or oval area deserves closer attention. Alopecia areata often presents with smooth patches of hair loss and may also affect the scalp, eyebrows or other hair-bearing areas.

Scalp ringworm refers to a fungal infection of the scalp, but fungal infection can also involve beard skin. Redness, flaking, pustules or hairs that snap near the surface point toward an inflamed or infectious process rather than simple variation in density. A clinician may examine the hairs and skin or take a sample before choosing treatment.

Photograph the area in similar lighting every few weeks and note itching, scale, pain, broken hairs, new products and whether other sites are affected. Wash gently, avoid picking or vigorous brushing, and pause any product that burns or causes a rash. Do not share razors or towels when infection is possible.

Avoid starting steroid creams, antifungal medicine or hair-growth products solely from appearance; these treatments address different problems and an unsuitable product can obscure the examination. Hair transplantation is generally considered only after the cause is understood and the hair-loss pattern is stable.

Book a dermatology assessment if a patch is new, enlarging, recurring, appearing in several places or accompanied by nail changes. Seek prompt care for marked redness, swelling, warmth, pus, significant pain, fever or rapidly spreading skin changes, as these features may signal infection or substantial inflammation.

An earlier appointment is also sensible if hair loss began after a medicine change or if you have fatigue, weight change or other new symptoms. Bring a list of medicines and supplements and, if available, dated photographs showing how the patch evolved.

Ask whether the surface and border suggest alopecia areata, fungal infection, irritation or scarring; whether hair or skin testing would change the plan; which grooming products to stop; and what signs would show that treatment is working. Also clarify whether follicles appear intact, because scarring and non-scarring hair loss are managed differently.
