BAUS flexible cystoscopy information explained

BAUS is the British Association of Urological Surgeons, not the name of a different camera technique. Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed with local anaesthetic gel placed in the urethra. Fluid is introduced so the bladder lining can be viewed, which can create a temporary feeling of fullness or an urge to urinate.

The clinician looks for inflammation, narrowing, stones, bleeding points and unusual areas of bladder lining. The test may be arranged after blood appears in the urine, because of urinary symptoms, or as follow-up after a bladder condition. Bladder cancer often presents with blood in the urine, although the symptom has several possible causes.

Some findings are visible immediately, but an appearance alone may not provide a final diagnosis. If tissue needs to be removed or a larger intervention is required, the team may arrange another procedure. Urine results, scans and pathology can add information to what was seen.

Check your hospital instructions before attending. Tell the team if you may have a urine infection, take blood-thinning medicine, have allergies or could be pregnant. Unless your clinic says otherwise, flexible cystoscopy usually does not require the same preparation as a procedure under general anaesthesia; follow your own appointment letter rather than assuming.

Afterward, brief stinging, urinary frequency or lightly blood-stained urine may occur. Fluids may help if you have not been advised to limit them for another health condition. Call the urology team if burning or bleeding is getting worse rather than settling, or if you develop fever, chills, foul-smelling urine or increasing lower abdominal pain. Urgent assessment is needed if you cannot pass urine, pass heavy blood or clots, become faint or feel severely unwell. These symptoms may reflect infection, urinary retention or bleeding and should be assessed on their own clinical urgency.
