What should you know about a baseline DEXA scan?

Short answer

A baseline DEXA scan provides a starting measurement of bone mineral density for future comparison and care planning.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the scan tells you

DEXA, also called a bone density scan, uses low-dose X-rays to assess bones commonly affected by loss of strength, such as the hip and spine. The result helps a clinician understand whether bone density is within an expected range, lower than expected, or consistent with osteoporosis. A baseline is especially useful before or during care that may affect bone health, including hormonal changes linked with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency. It is a reference point, not a prediction of whether you will break a bone.

How to prepare and follow up

Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, have recently had an examination involving contrast material, or cannot lie comfortably on your back. Wear clothing without bulky metal fasteners if possible. The scan is usually brief, and you remain awake while the scanner records measurements. Ask when and how the report will be explained. Keep the result available, because later scans are most useful when performed and interpreted in a comparable way. Your clinician may also discuss calcium, vitamin D, exercise, falls prevention, or treatment depending on the result and your wider health.

When to seek medical advice

A DEXA scan is generally planned rather than an emergency test. Contact a clinician promptly after a fall or injury if you have significant hip or back pain, cannot bear weight, or develop sudden loss of movement. Seek urgent help for severe pain with weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Arrange routine review if you have had a fracture after a minor injury, take medicines that can weaken bone, or are concerned about early loss of ovarian function; these details can change how the scan is interpreted.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what prompted the scan, which areas will be measured, and how your result will be described. You can also ask when a repeat measurement might help, whether medicines or supplements need review, and which activity or falls-prevention steps suit your health.

Questions people ask

Is a baseline DEXA scan the same as a bone density scan?

Yes. DEXA is the scanning method used for a bone density scan.

Does the scan diagnose the cause of weak bones?

No. It measures density; your clinician may need your history, examination, and other tests to understand causes.
