Barking cough: causes, care, and warning signs

A barking sound does not point to one condition. A cold or other infection may inflame the upper airway. Reflux, allergic nasal drainage, inhaled smoke, or asthma can cause repeated throat irritation or a different cough pattern. Notice whether the voice is hoarse, breathing is noisy between coughs, mucus is present, or wheezing and chest tightness occur. The onset is also useful: sudden symptoms after food or a small object raise a different concern from a cough that followed several days of a cold.

For a child, watch breathing closely because a smaller airway can make swelling more noticeable. Adults should also take a new or recurring harsh cough seriously when it affects breathing or sleep.

Let the person rest upright and speak quietly. Offer fluids when swallowing is safe. Remove smoke, incense, aerosols, and other strong smells from the room. Avoid hot steam and do not place a child in a steamy bathroom without supervision. Follow label directions for any age-appropriate medicine, and ask a pharmacist about interactions or whether a cough product is suitable. Keep a brief record of timing, triggers, fever, voice change, and breathing sounds.

Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, drooling, inability to swallow, collapse, confusion, or a high-pitched breathing sound present at rest. Any barking cough that follows choking warrants urgent assessment. Make a clinician appointment when symptoms recur, fever persists, wheeze develops, sleep is repeatedly disturbed, or the cough continues after the original illness has improved.
