What should you know about BAP1 melanoma?

The change may be present only in the tumour or inherited and present throughout the body. Those possibilities have different implications, so a tumour result alone does not establish an inherited condition.

BAP1 normally helps regulate cell growth. A pathologist may suspect loss of BAP1 activity from the appearance of a lesion and can use specialised testing to examine the tumour. Genetic testing of blood or saliva may then be considered when an inherited change is a concern.

An inherited BAP1 change can be associated with certain skin and eye melanomas and several other tumours. It does not predict that every carrier will develop each condition. Personal history, family history, examination findings, and the exact laboratory result all shape the interpretation.

Arrange review with the dermatologist or oncology team that holds the pathology report. Ask whether the finding came from tumour testing, whether inherited testing is appropriate, and whether genetic counselling would help you and your relatives understand the choices.

Treatment depends on the melanoma's site, depth, spread, and other pathology features rather than the gene name alone. Care may include complete surgical removal, evaluation of nearby lymph nodes in selected cases, medicines for disease that has spread, and a personalised surveillance plan. Keep copies of pathology and genetic reports because the wording matters.

Book a prompt skin assessment for a new or changing mole, a dark streak beneath a nail, a spot that bleeds without clear injury, or a sore that does not heal. Report new vision changes or a persistent eye symptom promptly as well.

If you have already been treated for melanoma, contact your care team about a new lump, unexplained persistent pain, worsening headaches, weakness, seizures, confusion, or breathing difficulty. Sudden severe neurological or breathing symptoms require emergency care.

Ask: Was the BAP1 change found only in the melanoma? Do my personal or family histories suggest inherited testing? What does the pathology say about the melanoma itself? Which skin, eye, or other examinations are appropriate for me? Should relatives receive genetic counselling before considering a test?
