Repeated pulling or tight styling damages hairs through tension. A widening crown or receding hairline follows a different process again, so copying someone else's treatment can delay appropriate care or irritate the scalp.

Pause tight hairstyles, bleaching, aggressive brushing and high heat. Wash gently enough to remove scale and product buildup, but do not scrape the area or apply garlic, acids, essential oils or other irritating home mixtures. Take a clear baseline photograph and note itch, tenderness, shedding, recent illness, medicines and grooming habits. A dermatologist may examine the hairs closely or test scale before recommending medication or a restoration procedure.

Seek prompt medical care if redness is spreading or the scalp develops pain, pus, swelling, thick crust or fever. Arrange an appointment for rapid enlargement, multiple patches, eyebrow or eyelash loss, or skin that looks shiny and scarred. Children with a scaly bald patch should be assessed rather than treated with household remedies, because contagious scalp infection is one possible explanation.

Ask what features support the diagnosis, whether a fungal test or other investigation is needed, and which treatment targets that cause. Confirm how to apply any scalp medicine, which reactions require stopping it, whether household contacts need evaluation, and when photographs or an examination should be repeated.
