A new bald spot on the scalp

Several conditions can produce a similar-looking gap in hair. A smooth round patch may fit alopecia areata, whereas scale, itch, inflamed skin, or hairs snapped at different lengths can occur with scalp ringworm or another scalp disorder.

Hair loss from tight braids, extensions, repeated pulling, pressure, or scratching may correspond to where tension is greatest. A scarred, shiny area with reduced follicle openings is different from a patch where the openings remain visible and warrants specialist assessment.

Check the rest of the scalp rather than focusing only on the centre of the patch. Flaking at the margin, tender bumps, crusting, short stubs, widened partings, or additional small gaps provide useful diagnostic clues. Hair loss in the eyebrows, lashes, beard, or body should also be mentioned.

Switch to a loose hairstyle, handle wet hair gently, and keep chemical straighteners or strong dyes away from irritated skin. Do not share combs, hats, pillowcases, or clippers when scaling or infection is possible, and avoid treating the area with leftover prescription creams.

Photograph the spot with the hair parted the same way and include an object for scale. A clinician may use magnification, examine loose or broken hairs, and request a fungal sample when the surface suggests infection. The result determines whether anti-inflammatory, antifungal, or other care is appropriate.

Book an appointment for a patch that is expanding, recurring, accompanied by scalp symptoms, or not showing improvement. Get quicker medical advice if there is fever, painful swelling, drainage, extensive crusting, or rapidly spreading redness. A child with a scaly patch and broken hairs should be assessed because contagious scalp infection may require prescription treatment.

You can ask whether the follicles look intact, whether a fungal test or other examination is needed, and which hair practices are safe while the cause is being established. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and describe recent illness, stress, styling changes, itching, or close contact with anyone who has a scalp rash.
