A receding or thinned strip where braids, extensions, tight ponytails, wigs or head coverings pull repeatedly can fit traction-related hair loss. Short snapped hairs support breakage, whereas a completely smooth patch can occur with alopecia areata. Scalp ringworm can present with patchy loss accompanied by scale, inflammation or fragile hairs.

Gradual widening around the front part may reflect patterned thinning rather than one isolated spot. Redness, shiny skin, tenderness or loss of visible follicle openings can point toward a scarring process, which deserves prompt specialist assessment because damaged follicles may not regrow normally.

Pause hairstyles that pull on the affected edge and avoid glue, harsh chemicals, heat or vigorous brushing over the spot. Use gentle hair care and take clear photographs in similar lighting so changes in the border are easier to track. Do not share combs or headwear if the area is scaly.

Arrange a primary-care or dermatology visit if the spot persists, expands or has no obvious link to styling. The examination may include the scalp, eyebrows and nails, plus questions about medicines, recent illness, menstrual changes, nutrition and family patterns. Treatment depends on the diagnosis; transplant surgery is not a first step while hair loss is active or unexplained.

Seek timely medical assessment for pain, pus, crusting, spreading redness, swelling, fever, a boggy tender area, or rapid expansion. Prompt review is also appropriate when the skin looks smooth and shiny, burns, or appears to be losing follicle openings. Children or household contacts with scaly patches should be assessed because a fungal infection can spread.

Ask whether the pattern suggests traction, alopecia areata, infection, patterned thinning or a scarring disorder; whether dermoscopy or testing would clarify it; which hair practices to stop; and what change would show that treatment is working. Mention eyebrow loss, nail changes, scalp symptoms and every product applied near the hairline.
