A bald spot on the crown in women

A crown swirl naturally exposes some scalp, especially under bright overhead light. A new smooth circle, progressive widening around the part, numerous short broken hairs, or an inflamed surface gives more useful information than visibility alone.

Gradual thinning can make the crown and central part look broader while leaving hairs throughout the area. Alopecia areata may present as a smooth patch with clearer borders. Scaling and snapped hairs can occur with scalp ringworm, while burning, tenderness, bumps or shiny skin can point to an inflammatory or scarring process.

Recent illness, major stress, hormonal changes, restrictive eating, medicines and family hair patterns can help a clinician interpret more widespread shedding. These factors do not replace examination of the scalp.

Compare photographs taken with dry hair, the same part and similar lighting. Note whether the change is a bare patch or reduced density across a wider zone. Use comfortable styles, handle wet hair gently, and pause extensions, tight braids, harsh straightening or repeated high heat if they stress the crown.

Avoid starting several supplements or topical products at once. They can cause side effects, obscure what is helping, and delay treatment for infection or inflammation.

Make a dermatology appointment for a definite new patch, continuing loss, marked shedding, or associated eyebrow or nail changes. Pain, itch, scale, crusting, pustules, a shiny surface, or loss of follicle openings should be assessed without delay because scalp disease may need targeted therapy.

Get urgent help if redness is spreading quickly, the scalp becomes markedly swollen, or fever and worsening pain accompany drainage.

Ask whether the crown shows miniaturised hairs, breakage, inflammation or scarring; whether any testing is appropriate; and how treatment response will be judged. Mention pregnancy plans, recent health changes and every medicine or supplement, since these can affect the choice of therapy.
