Short answer

A bald spot in natural hair may come from tension, shaft breakage, alopecia areata, scalp infection or inflammation, and shrinkage can make density difficult to judge.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Texture effect
Shrinkage and parting can change how much scalp is visible.
Breakage clue
Hair fragments of varied lengths point toward shaft damage.
Low-tension care
A protective style should not cause soreness, bumps or a pulling sensation.

What the spot may represent

Coils can separate around a part or crown whorl and reveal scalp without true follicle loss. A new patch that remains visible after gentle sectioning deserves closer attention, especially if its border is expanding or the skin is scaly, sore or unusually smooth.

Separate breakage from loss at the root

Tiny coiled fragments and strands of mixed length suggest breakage. A patch with few hairs emerging from the scalp suggests shedding or follicle damage. Repeated tight braids, loc retwisting, cornrows, extensions, wigs or slick styles can concentrate force at an anchor point.

Alopecia areata commonly presents with a smooth patch. Scalp ringworm may present with scaling, itch and fragile hairs. Persistent tenderness, bumps, crust or a shiny surface needs evaluation because inflammation can harm follicles if it continues.

Protect the hair and keep the scalp visible

Release braids, twists or extensions that feel tight, and avoid repeatedly anchoring a style at the patch. Detangle with slip and work in sections without forcing knots. Reduce high heat and pause relaxers, dyes, adhesives or fragranced products if the scalp is irritated.

Take a photograph with the hair gently parted, not pulled taut, and repeat it under comparable light. A dermatologist or other qualified clinician can examine whether follicle openings remain and whether hairs are broken. If infection is suspected, avoid sharing bonnets, combs, brushes and clippers until assessed.

When the scalp needs medical review

Seek prompt care when the patch is painful, swollen, draining, rapidly enlarging or accompanied by fever or spreading redness. Arrange an early appointment for shiny skin, loss of follicle openings, ongoing burning, repeated bumps or thick crust. An assessment is also appropriate when gentle styling changes do not stop progression or when patches develop elsewhere.

Bring your routine into the conversation

Describe wash frequency, detangling, heat, chemical treatments, extensions, wig attachment and how long styles remain in place. Ask whether the pattern reflects breakage, traction, infection or autoimmune loss; which practices to pause; and how to care for the surrounding coils while the scalp recovers.

Questions people ask

Should I cover the spot with a protective style?

Camouflage is reasonable only if it adds no pulling, adhesive irritation or friction. A tight style can make traction-related loss worse.

Do oils regrow a bald patch?

Oils can lubricate hair shafts or reduce dryness, but they do not address every follicle disorder. The cause determines whether medical treatment is needed.

How can I photograph the area accurately?

Part the hair gently around the patch, use the same angle and lighting, and avoid stretching the coils differently between photographs.
