Why is there a bald spot in my beard?

Some causes interrupt growth while leaving the follicles capable of producing hair; others inflame or scar them. This difference affects whether regrowth is expected and which treatment makes sense. Checking the cheeks, jawline, chin and neck also shows whether the gap is isolated or part of a broader facial-hair pattern.

A smooth patch with a clear edge can be a presentation of alopecia areata. Scale, crust, broken hairs or an inflamed border may occur with fungal infection, while shaving-related folliculitis tends to produce bumps centred on hairs. Repeated picking may create an uneven patch containing hairs of mixed lengths. A shiny or firm surface can suggest scarring and should be examined without delay.

Avoid picking at stubble and give sore skin a break from shaving. Clean clippers after use, do not share them, and shave in the direction of hair growth once the skin is comfortable. Stop a new beard dye, balm or oil if symptoms began after application. Make a note of itching, pain, scale and new patches. These observations give a dermatologist more useful information than trimming the area repeatedly to test its growth.

Have the patch checked if it is spreading, if several areas develop, or if eyelashes, eyebrows or scalp hair also change. Prompt review is needed for worsening tenderness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever or deep painful lumps. If an area looks scarred, early assessment matters because controlling inflammation may help protect follicles that remain. Sudden facial swelling or trouble breathing requires urgent medical attention.

List recent beard products, medicines, skin infections and grooming changes. Ask whether the follicles are visible, whether similar patches elsewhere alter the diagnosis, and whether sampling is needed before treatment. If medicine is prescribed, confirm how much belongs on the patch, how to protect the nearby lips, and which signs mean you should stop or return sooner.
