Bald spot in an eyebrow: what it can mean

Skin clues are as important as the missing hairs. Smooth skin can occur with alopecia areata; itch, flaking, redness, broken hairs, or crust suggest a different process. Loss at the outer edge, loss in both brows, or changes elsewhere can give the clinician further diagnostic clues.

A single sharply outlined area may develop when immune activity pauses growth in selected follicles. Dermatitis around the brow may cause itch and rubbing, while fungal infection can leave scale and fragile hair shafts. Tweezing, waxing, tight cosmetic threads, and repeated touching can create a pattern that follows the source of traction or trauma.

Eyebrow thinning can occasionally accompany broader hair loss or a general health issue. The location alone cannot identify the cause, so avoid interpreting one patch as proof of a particular condition.

Stop plucking, waxing, tinting, laminating, and newly introduced cosmetics around the area until irritation settles. Clean gently, keep fragranced products away from the eyelid, and resist rubbing. Take a clear photograph and check whether the patch is changing or whether lashes, scalp hair, or the other eyebrow are affected.

Because treatment near the eye requires care, do not use strong steroid preparations, essential oils, or antifungal products there without professional advice. A clinician can examine follicle openings and skin texture and, if infection is possible, choose an appropriate test.

Book an appointment when the gap is widening, persists, recurs, or is joined by other areas of hair loss. Obtain urgent assessment if redness or swelling spreads toward the eye, the eye becomes painful, vision changes, blisters appear, or there is pus or fever. Shiny skin without follicle openings also warrants timely dermatology review.

Useful questions include whether the loss is scarring, whether lashes or nails should be examined, and whether skin sampling is needed. Ask which eye-area products are safe and what early regrowth would look like.
