Using hair fibers on a bald spot

They tend to blend better where short or fine hairs remain around or within the area. A completely smooth patch offers little for loose fibers to attach to and may look dusty or sharply outlined.

Most hair fibers are colored particles designed to cling to hair shafts and make coverage appear denser. They can improve camouflage for photographs or daily styling, yet they do not stimulate follicles, prevent a patch from widening or reveal why hair was lost.

Patchy loss has several possible causes. Alopecia areata often presents with smooth round or oval areas, while scalp ringworm may include scale, itch, crust and broken hairs. Covering these signs before an examination can make the surface harder to assess, so arrive with clean, product-free hair when possible.

Patch-test a small amount away from broken skin, keep the container from touching the scalp, and apply lightly to dry hair rather than rubbing particles into the patch. Stop if burning, itching, redness or bumps develop. Remove the product gently according to its directions instead of scraping or vigorous brushing.

Do not apply fibers over weeping, crusted, infected or recently injured skin. Avoid breathing the loose material during application and keep it away from the eyes. Clean applicators and never share them, especially when a fungal infection has not been ruled out.

Pause cosmetic coverage and arrange a clinical review when a patch is new, growing, repeatedly returning, or associated with scale, pain, redness, pustules or loss of follicle openings. Prompt diagnosis matters because treatment depends on whether the cause is immune-related, fungal, traction-related or scarring.

Get urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, pus, fever, or a tender boggy scalp area. These are infection warning signs rather than reasons to apply more concealer.

Ask whether fibers are suitable for the current condition of your scalp, which ingredients could irritate treated skin, and how long before an examination the product should be removed. If treatment is prescribed, clarify the order and timing of medicine, moisturiser, sunscreen and cosmetic products so one does not interfere with another.
