Alopecia areata often presents as one or more sharply defined smooth patches and may also affect beard hair, eyebrows or nails. Scalp ringworm can present with patchy loss plus scale, itch, crust or hairs snapped near the skin. Hair repeatedly pulled by a tight style may thin most where tension is strongest.

Redness, burning, pustules, tenderness or a shiny surface can point toward an inflammatory process. None of these observations is a home diagnosis: clinicians may use magnification, gently test hairs, examine scale, or request a sample when infection is possible.

Choose a fixed landmark such as the ear or hairline and take serial photographs with dry, product-free hair. Record whether the edge expands evenly or forms separate patches. Include scalp sensations, flaking, broken hairs, nail changes, recent fever or illness, and any new hairstyle, chemical process or medication in your notes.

Switch to loose styling and gentle washing while waiting for assessment. Protect exposed scalp from strong sun with shade or a comfortable loose hat. If infection is suspected, keep hair tools and headwear personal and wash pillowcases and towels regularly rather than sharing them.

Book a medical visit when growth persists, additional patches form, or hair loss extends beyond the original area. A dermatologist can distinguish non-scarring loss, where follicle openings remain, from scarring forms that may need early control to limit further follicle injury.

Seek faster care if the patch is very painful, swollen, draining, thickly crusted, or accompanied by fever or spreading redness. A child with scalp scale and patchy hair loss also needs timely evaluation because fungal scalp disease requires an appropriate prescription rather than a cosmetic cover-up.

Bring your image sequence and ask whether the follicles appear intact, whether infection testing is needed, and what findings would change the treatment plan. Clarify when improvement should first be judged, whether shedding can continue briefly after treatment begins, and which products are safe on the exposed skin.
