Can a bald spot be cured?

Some causes are reversible once inflammation, infection, pulling or another trigger is addressed. Scarring damage can destroy follicles, so early diagnosis matters when the scalp is painful, inflamed or becoming smooth and shiny.

Alopecia areata often presents with smooth, sharply outlined patches and involves immune activity around hair follicles. Scalp ringworm can present with scaly areas, itching and broken hairs; it generally requires prescription antifungal medicine rather than an ordinary anti-dandruff shampoo.

Repeated traction, hair-shaft breakage and inflammatory scalp diseases require other approaches. A hair transplant redistributes suitable donor follicles and may be considered for selected stable forms of hair loss, but it does not correct an active infection or uncontrolled inflammation.

Record when the patch appeared, whether it is growing, and any itch, pain, scale, broken hairs or shedding elsewhere. Bring a list of medicines, recent illnesses, restrictive eating patterns and hair practices to the appointment. A dermatologist may inspect the follicles closely and select tests according to the examination.

Until then, avoid tight hairstyles, harsh scalp chemicals, scratching and unverified mixtures that burn or irritate. Gentle washing does not make a rooted hair-loss condition spread. Use only treatment intended for the diagnosed problem, since steroid products can mask an infection and antifungal creams may not adequately treat infection within scalp hair follicles.

Seek prompt medical care for rapid expansion, marked tenderness, swelling, pus, crusting, fever or a soft boggy scalp swelling. Arrange a dermatology visit if the patch persists, new patches appear, the skin looks shiny, or eyebrows and eyelashes are also affected. These features guide urgency because some inflammatory or infectious causes benefit from timely treatment.

Ask for the working diagnosis, whether follicles appear intact, what each proposed medicine targets, and which side effects should prompt contact. Also ask when change should be reviewed, how photographs can track regrowth, and whether camouflage or hair styling is safe during treatment.
