Bald Head Psoriasis: Signs, Scalp Care and When to Get Help

With less hair covering the scalp, plaques may be easier to see but also more exposed to sunlight, shaving friction and drying products. Psoriasis is inflammatory and is not contagious.

Scalp psoriasis may present with raised areas covered by white or silvery scale, redness that can look purple or darker on deeper skin tones, itching, soreness, flaking or small cracks. Patches can extend beyond the hairline or occur around the ears and back of the neck.

Several problems can resemble it, including dandruff, eczema, a fungal infection or irritation from clippers. A clinician can examine the pattern and may check for psoriasis on the elbows, knees, nails or other skin.

Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturise after washing. Avoid picking scale because this can split the skin and trigger bleeding. If shaving, soften the skin first, use clean equipment, shave with light pressure and pause over inflamed plaques.

Medicated scalp products can help, but the right formulation depends on plaque thickness and skin sensitivity. Follow the application instructions given by a pharmacist or clinician, and mention any facial or eye-area involvement before using a medicated product nearby.

Arrange a medical review if the diagnosis is uncertain, patches persist despite scalp care, itching disrupts sleep, or the skin is painful and repeatedly cracks. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever or marked tenderness because these can accompany infection.

New joint pain, stiffness or swollen fingers or toes also deserves assessment, as psoriasis can occur alongside joint inflammation.
