What should you know about bad nasal congestion?

A Common Cold can temporarily swell the nasal lining and produce mucus. Allergic Rhinitis or House Dust Mite Allergy may cause congestion with sneezing, itching and clear discharge. Sinusitis can add facial pressure, reduced smell or thick drainage, while Chronic Sinusitis causes symptoms that linger or return. Night-time blockage, loud snoring, pauses in breathing or waking unrefreshed can point toward Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. One blocked nose does not establish any single diagnosis.

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and known allergens, and try a saline nasal rinse or spray using safe, prepared water according to the product instructions. Elevating the head slightly may improve night-time drainage. Allergy Medication can help when an allergy pattern is present, but check with a pharmacist if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma, pregnancy or other medicines. Use decongestant sprays only as directed and for the recommended short period, because overuse can worsen rebound blockage.

Arrange a review if congestion persists, repeatedly returns, is mainly on one side, or affects sleep, smell or hearing. Seek urgent help for severe facial swelling, vision changes, a stiff neck, confusion, breathing difficulty, or a severe headache with fever.
