Headache at the Back Right Side: What to Know

Pain at the back of the head may be linked to tight neck or scalp muscles, prolonged screen posture, or irritation of nerves near the skull base. A migraine can be one-sided and may include nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Congestion from allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, or a common cold can create head and facial pressure, although sinus pressure is not the only cause of headache. COVID-19, dehydration, heat exhaustion, and dengue fever may also produce headache with other symptoms. Location alone cannot identify the cause.

Rest in a quiet, cool place, drink fluids if you can, and take breaks from screens. Gentle neck movement and a supported posture may help when the pain follows stiffness or prolonged sitting. Record when the headache began, its severity, triggers, associated symptoms, and any medicine taken. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you and follow its label directions; avoid taking headache medicines repeatedly without medical advice. Arrange assessment if headaches keep returning, change pattern, or interfere with normal activities.

Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, seizure, fainting, confusion, vision loss, or a severe headache after a head injury. Fever with a stiff neck, a new severe headache during pregnancy, or severe headache with repeated vomiting also needs urgent assessment. If fever and marked body pain follow mosquito exposure or occur with bleeding, seek prompt medical care. New headache with heat exhaustion symptoms can worsen quickly and should not be managed by cooling alone if you feel faint or confused.
