What to know about BaByliss hair-removal laser devices

Light-based devices heat pigment in hair to reduce regrowth over repeated use. Their suitability depends on the device’s approved skin tones, hair colours and body areas. The manual for the model in your hand should guide use; advice for a different product may be unsafe.

Intense pulsed light releases a range of light wavelengths, while a clinic laser uses a selected wavelength. Alexandrite, diode and Nd:YAG systems have different properties, and a trained practitioner chooses settings with skin tone, hair pigment and treatment area in mind. A home device generally operates at lower energy and must be used repeatedly according to its instructions.

Dark, coarse hair often absorbs light more readily than very pale, red, grey or white hair. Skin pigment can also absorb energy, so using a device outside its stated skin-tone range raises the chance of burns or colour change. Do not treat tattoos, dark moles or areas the manual excludes.

Compare your skin tone and hair colour with the manufacturer’s compatibility chart, then perform the instructed patch test and wait for the stated observation period. Shave if directed, but do not wax or pluck beforehand because the target hair must remain in the follicle. Skin should be clean, dry and free from perfume, deodorant or tanning products.

Avoid recently tanned or sunburned skin and use eye protection only as directed for that model; ordinary sunglasses are not a substitute if dedicated protection is required. Medicines that increase light sensitivity and active skin conditions can alter safety, so check with a pharmacist or clinician before treatment when either applies.

Mild warmth or short-lived redness can occur. Stop treatment and obtain medical advice for blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, open skin, spreading redness or persistent darkening or lightening. Eye pain or a change in vision after a flash needs urgent assessment. Do not re-treat a reacting area until it has healed and the cause has been reviewed.

Ask whether your medicines, pigmentation history or tendency to scar affects light treatment. If repeated shaving produces ingrown hairs or razor bumps, ask whether hair reduction could help and how active inflammation should be managed before starting.
