Ayurvedic medicine for wheezing

Wheezing is a high-pitched sound caused by air moving through narrowed breathing tubes. A clinician should identify the cause, particularly when wheeze is new, recurring or accompanied by breathlessness. Herbal steam, oils and oral remedies do not open the airways reliably during an attack.

Asthma commonly presents with wheezing, cough, chest tightness and variable breathing difficulty. Acute bronchitis and COPD can also present with wheeze. In babies, bronchiolitis may cause noisy breathing with difficulty feeding; a sudden allergic reaction may include wheezing with swelling, rash or collapse.

The timing gives useful clues: symptoms after exercise, dust, smoke, animals, infection, a meal or a new medicine should be recorded. The sound alone cannot distinguish the cause.

Sit upright, move away from smoke or a suspected trigger, and use the prescribed reliever exactly as set out in your asthma or breathing plan. If you do not have a diagnosis or inhaler, seek timely medical assessment rather than borrowing someone else's medicine.

Tell the clinician about every Ayurvedic preparation. Smoke from incense, strong vapours and some oils can irritate sensitive airways, while oral products may interact with treatment. Nebuliser treatment is used in selected clinical situations and should not be assumed necessary for every episode.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to speak comfortably, marked chest pulling in a child, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Wheezing with tongue or throat swelling, widespread hives or collapse can be anaphylaxis and needs immediate emergency treatment.

Obtain urgent medical review when a prescribed reliever is not helping as expected, breathing remains laboured, or a baby has trouble feeding or fewer wet nappies. Do not delay care while trying a traditional remedy.

Ask whether lung-function testing or allergy assessment is appropriate, how to use and clean an inhaler device, and what written action plan to follow. Also ask which ingredients, smoke-based practices or oils could aggravate your airways or interfere with prescribed treatment.
